best vacuum for pet hair and carpet and hardwood floors

Pet hair doesn’t just sit on the floor waiting to be vacuumed! A real pet owner knows that pet hair is like a needle and weaves its way into carpets, rugs, sofas and anywhere else it seems to land! So what is the best vacuum for pet hair and carpet?

On the testing best vacuum for pet hairs by Vacuum Wars says Shark Apex and the Dyson V10 Absolute was big winners, in part because of their amazing carpet performance with their soft rollers. But the Apex is basically unparalleled with both hard floor and carpet pickup.

As far as thick carpet performance the main loser was the Dyson Multifloor 2 which was incredibly difficult to push on thicker carpets, and it stalled out several times. The Shark True Pet also stalled out a few times on thick carpet, but at least with the Shark, it has a switch which reduces the suction for thick carpets and when we tested it on its thick carpet setting it ran perfectly.

Two other tests that are important when finding a vacuum for pet owners is the filtration and the attachments set. With the filtration, The Kenmore Elite, Shark Apex, and Dyson V10 and Shark True Pet all had sealed systems with HEPA filters and passed our test with a perfect score.

Best Vacuum for Getting Dog Hair Off The Carpet?

I really don’t think the bristles are going to make a huge difference in your carpets/rugs. We have a couple of oriental rugs very similar to what you have and our Miele upright hasn’t posed any threat or shown any damage to them in a year of use.

As for a bagged vs. bagless vacuum, some vacuums and canisters use bags, some collect dirt in a bin. Bag-type vacuums tend to hold more dirt, and emptying them releases less dust into the air. An indicator that tells you when the bag or bin is full reminds you to empty the dirt before it impairs cleaning.

With bagless vacuums, you can save money by not having to buy bags, but they still use filters such as HEPA filters that need to be periodically cleaned or replaced. Replacement filters tend to be significantly more expensive than bags. Another caveat: Emptying the dustbin and cleaning a filter can be messy, and handling it can expose you to dust and other allergens. And there is always some residual dirt left in the canister from the static that builds up, looks dirty.

And while Dyson started the bagless craze, they’ve been outdone in cleaning ability, especially on carpeting, never a Dyson strong suit, by other bagless vacs, such as some from LG, Hoover, Kenmore, and Eureka…all uprights.

I prefer uprights because, while a canister typically does make less noise than an upright, the uprights tend to clean a tad better and have larger capacities for dirt. And while the upright means you have to push/pull the entire machine when you vacuum, I still find that easier than constantly having to drag the canister part of the vac behind like a lost puppy dog which constantly loses its way…’re restricted in easy freedom of movement in a canister by the length of the hose between the powerhead and the canister, and then by the cored length. With an upright, the movement is only restricted by the cord length.

We love our Miele definitely not cheap! but I’d also look at the Kenmore Elite 31150, Kenmore Intuition 31100, and the Hoover WindTunnel Max UH30600. All are no less the equal of any Dyson on bare floors and all outperform any Dyson on carpets and picking up pet hair. Now, let’s dive into the reviews of the top pet vacuums. We hope our selection helps you find the best vacuum for pet hair and keeping your home clean.

Shark Apex Duoclean with Zero M Powered Lift Away AZ1002

This is best vacuum hardwood floors and carpet for pet owners and allergies. I love Shark Apex Zero M vacuum, almost as much as I loved my Rainbow that lasted about 20 years! The dirt that was picked up in my house, which is a mix of hardwood floors and carpeting, was amazing!

Mobility is excellent when vacuuming the floors. Pushing the vacuum forward and back requires little effort. The active rollers do pull the vacuum forward and offer some resistance when pulling back against them. But, nothing that hinders my ability to move around the room. It moves better than my Shark Rocket!

I thinks Duo Clean technology is the best invention in the vacuum world in a long time. It’s basically a soft roller and a standard brush roll combined in the same cleaner head. It picks up just everything it touches on carpet or hard floors.

The soft roller is amazing for the finest dust, up to the largest debris on hard floors. If you have hard floors you need a vacuum with a soft roller period. But the Apex is great for carpets as well, you just flip the switch from the hard floor to its low or high pile carpet settings and it reduces the suction, and speeds up the brush roll for the same great performance on carpet.

It is also more powerful than the previous Sharks I have owned. The cleaning power is excellent. My Shark Rocket has the special soft roller on the front to push dirt into the vacuum. This same roller, combined with the powerful motor of the AZ1002, creates a supercharged cleaning beast.

I was surprised at how much dirt and hair the dust cut captured on my small 7 x 5 living room rug. I was using the Shark Rocket to clean this rug and never came close to this much material in a single cleaning session. I got the same performance on my hardwood, carpeted, and tile floors.

The pet brush did an excellent job picking up the fur from the furniture. The easy release wand is good for reaching those hard to reach places. Its pet hair pickup is second to none as well which brings us to the brand new Zero M technology. So the Zero M, which I assume stands for zero maintenance is a completely redesigned brush roll which uses little protrusions on the top of the nozzle to actively remove pet hair that tries to wrap itself around the brush. We tried our very best to get it wrapped in hair with our tests and at the end of the day of tests, there was virtually nothing to clean up.

The wand is excellent for getting into the radiator covers and removing the dust and fur. I could also get under the radiators to clean the floor underneath. The fabulous HEPA filtration kept all of that dust and dirt inside the vacuum. It has a noise reduction technology, as well as active glide technology which makes it easier to maneuver. It’s also a completely sealed system with HEPA filtration.

Bissell 20431 Powerglide Lift Off Pet Plus Upright Bagless Vacuum

The key features of the Bissell 20431 Powerglide Lift-off Pet Plus vacuum that I like are: The suction power picked up everything it encountered. The rotating floor brush can be turned on or off based on your preference when working on carpet vs hardwood and tile.

The vacuum easily tilts back and side to side for easy turning. The crevice attachment is cleverly made with a small brush attachment at the end which can be moved up to the tip if you need a brush on the end.

It works great, powerful suction, easy to maneuver, excellent cord length, and gets the job done with ease. The lift-off canister is great for when you need to get along the edge of the floor in hard to reach places or vacuuming cobwebs from the ceiling.

The pivoting head is not so loose that it pivots on its own, but just the right amount of tension so that it only pivots when you want it to. This is great because I can actually vacuum under the coffee table in the living room without having to move it. This is also great for vacuuming around the dining room table and chairs.

The pet tool works well for cleaning couches and furniture. I love the Febreeze air filter that came included with the vacuum. It leaves the house smelling great vs dusty and musty like most vacuums smell when cleaning. The fact that all the tools are easily stored right on the vacuum is a big plus.

Does it do well on hardwood and carpet?

Bissell 20431 Powerglide Lift-off Pet Plus is great at both. It’s a very good deep cleaner carpet.

iRobot Roomba 980 Robot Vacuum with Wi-Fi Connectivity, Works with Alexa, Ideal for Pet Hair, Carpets, Hard Floors

If you want looking best robot vacuum for pet hairs and deep clean carpet you don’t want to spend over $900 for the top-of-the-line I7, iRobot Roomba 980 is a good option. It won’t clean the bin for you or remember your home’s layout, but you’ll save a few hundred bucks.

The Roomba 980 is a great option for homeowners looking for a smart robotic vacuum capable of cleaning a large home with carpet. I especially liked how the carpet boost function that increases suction on the carpet – similar to that of the Max function in a Dyson cordless vacuum.

It was great on the carpet with either eco or turbo mode, on a hard floor it was good to pick up all the sizes of debris we tested, in fact, it did better than most uprights we test with regard to the size of debris it was able to pick up but I would say that for hard floor turbo mode was better, at least for large amounts of debris.

This machine would be great on cleaning dust-prone hardwood surfaces where constant vacuuming would be a chore. With a low profile height of just 3.6 inches, it would be able to clean under most furniture like beds where dust can quickly accumulate.

As far as navigation and obstacle avoidance the Roomba 980s iAdapt 2.0 navigation which uses cameras to map out your home was absolutely amazing, it is so far beyond cheaper vacuums that randomly navigate, making it much more efficient and thorough.

You can choose to vacuum in eco or turbo mode or automatic mode which senses when its vacuuming carpet and boosts the power. It also has a spot mode which causes it to vacuums a 3 ft circle.

In the test, the Roomba 980 came in 4th behind the BotVac 85, D85, Roomba 880 and Samsung Powerbot VR9000. For the pet hair test, Roomba ranked in the middle of the pack with surprisingly better performance on medium pile carpet where it came in second in picking up pet hair behind the Botvac D85. It also outperformed the 880 at least on the carpet.

Dyson Cyclone V10 Absolute Lightweight Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner

The Dyson V10 is so easy to use and lightweight and it cleaned not only the floors but also that area rug better than the canister ever did. One thing that really impressed me was the excellent way the weight was distributed with the V10. It felt extremely light when using it as a handheld especially compared to the Ion-flex. It was easy to maneuver on hard floors and carpet. Overall I give its ease of use incredibly high marks for both surfaces.

Powerheads pick up an impressive amount of debris. Both our hardwood floors and our area rugs look outstanding after vacuuming. Run time allows us to vacuum both floors without needing to stop and recharge. The battery is a little bigger on the V10, but it goes to 60 minutes. A lot better than the 15 minutes on the V6. The V10 also has a multi-LED charge indicator.

The unit comes with a bunch of accessories, 3 powered brush type devices, and the rest are just suction. The extension pole carries power to the accessory if needed. The powered soft pad one worked great on my hardwood floors. Picked up pet hair to debris with no problems and no scratches.

The other powered cleaning tools are for carpet, one is full length and the other about half the size for tight areas. All work well, the ones will ball roll easily and the whole unit can be laid almost flat to get under furniture. On stairs whether with powered or suction only accessories the device had great suction and cleaned well.

Shark Rotator Powered Lift-Away TruePet (NV752) Upright Vacuum

With powerful suction, a non-stop motorized roller brush, and swivel steering technology, the Shark NV752 Rotator Powered TruePet Vacuum Cleaner offers exceptional performance and cleaning like no other.

This is a bagless upright vacuum with HEPA filtration and a 30-foot power cord. It also has a sealed system, a host of attachments and headlights on both the handle and the nozzle. In addition, it is a 3-in-1 vacuum which means it operates as an upright, a canister and even a handheld unit. The NV752 carries a 7-year warranty.

Even with all the accessories, this unit is lightweight and can be used to clean any surface. For those who own pets, this is by far the best vacuum cleaner that has superior pet hair and debris removal features.

The Shark NV752 is one of the best upright vacuums available on the market that can be easily converted into a canister cleaner with power being still delivered to maintain the spinning of the brush roll.

When it comes to vacuuming every nook and corner of your home, the NV752 offers effective cleaning without even having to move anything in its path. You should note that the Shark will NOT work on shag or thick carpet. The brush shuts off automatically.

How To Remove Hair From Carpet Without Vacuum

An effective way to remove pet hair out of carpet is to use a Pet Hair Removal Broom with Squeegee! I have a long hair cat and border collie puppy all of which shed their fair amount of fur, and the Squeegee is by far the most reliable in picking fur off the carpet more effective than my Dyson.

how to get dog hair out of carpet

It’s a carpet rake and it works like magic to effortlessly pull up all the dog hair. The real secret to making the carpet rake work its magic is a spray bottle. Before raking, spray a section of carpet with water. In a pinch or if your spray bottle stops working, you can run the rubber part of the rake head under water. Keep it damp to pick up the most hair. My favorite place to use the rake is on the stairs and car. It’s so much easier to maneuver than the vacuum.
